The first recommendation this month was easy – not just because it’s inventor Ben Williams is such a nice guy. OCL is a crazy visual linking of two rings made from a playing card. It was released some years ago, but Ellusionist have just re-filmed it and it is available as an instant download. A great effect and an impossible souvenir! Only £12.99

I like the look of this – the latest in a whole string of card to impossible location releases recently. The name amuses me – The One 2.0 (say it out loud!) – and the visuals look amazing. Spectator’s signed card to impossible location – gimmicked and impromptu versions are taught. £21.99 [Update – Full review]

Whilst we’re on the subject of card to impossible location, I think the genius that is Jon Allen has come up with possibly the final word on the card to clear box. You will have noticed a spate of these over the last few years but Paragon 3D really does look the business, and it leaves you clean and examinable. Astonishing. £59.99

Monochrome Surprise is a new version of an old classic – where the colours on a couple of brass poker chips keep changing. Easy to do and lovely props (including a nice leather carry case). Worth a pop at £24.99.

We were privileged to watch Matthew Wright lecture a year or so ago and he is a very clever magician with some great ideas. All his ‘Marvelous’ range of effects are really well produced, and this is (we believe) his first collaboration with Vanishing Magic who also have a good reputation for high quality work – so I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with his Marvelous Multiplying Card Boxes. Very visual, easy to do, and lots of ideas on the DVD to incorporate it into your act. £39.50

If you like card magic the chances are you have probably hit the point where you would find it useful to switch a deck in or out of play – but have you ever found a decent method? Christian Engblom has come up with something very clever in the Cooler to do just that. A clever gimmick plus a bit of practise… £41.50

Whilst we’re on the subject of accessories rather than effects or books etc. you may be interested in this clever item. I have come across a lot of effects recently with rough and smooth decks of various kinds. In the past these were a messy and fiddly business to prepare, but Harry Robson’s Roughing Stick promises to change that. Just rub the back of the card with the stick and you are good to go. £14.50

And now for something completely different. A really visual card revelation – on the side of an electric fan. What a great idea – and can be used for all sorts of other revelations too… £9.50

Although we usually stop at 3 items, here are two quick plugs for books which are well worth a look. Experience: The Magic of Jon Allen is a first class book with all kinds of magic from the innovative mind of Jon Allen. It is now available in paperback and in our opinion you should snap it up! A great read. £27.99 And if you are in to using a marked deck, you must have come across the name of Boris Wild. He has just released a new book all about using a marked deck which should definitely be on your list. £34.50.

MagicTricks.co.uk have just started releasing some powerful magic from one of the UK’s unsung magical heroes – Roger Curzon. This is his approach to the Signed Card in Envelope plot. There’s a sleight of hand and a sleight-free version and all the necessary gimmicks are included. There are also some extra routines on the DVD. A great hit at Blackpool this year, you get some great magic here for £20. (If you want to explore more of Roger’s magic, you will enjoy his first DVD Blood on the Tricks for only £19.99.)

We enjoyed Ben Harris’ clever Crossroads effect – and not just because we’re slightly obsessed with the thought of card in impossible location effect, and USPCC have recently produced this great Crossroads Double Faced Set of cards to make this effect even more slick. The set comes with detailed extra instructions with further ideas (though you will need the original Crossroads effect to fully understand this). £11.50 (or you can get the ‘Peek‘ edition for £7.99)

Here’s one of the most interesting twists on a card trick that we’ve seen in a while. To an intriguing story about Houdini, pictures of handcuffs open and Houdini disappears in The Vanishing. Another great original idea from Jon Allen. Only £15.50
